A cute, somewhat sentimental return to the kind of rites-of-passage movie with which Truffaut made his name, in The 400 Blows. Small Change lacks narrative coherence and dramatic focus, but has many good-natured, charming episodes. Perhaps Truffaut does idealize childhood, but he also shows a rare appreciation of it.
