Mad murderer in mansion menaces mute (Dorothy McGuire, pictured right with Ethel Barrymore).
Reviewed by Chris Tookey

Often regarded as a classic, this one has aged badly. There's one extraordinary image (the heroine without a mouth) and some stunning black-and-white photography directed in the highest Hitchcock style by Robert Siodmak, but the identity of the murderer is not enough of a mystery. Modern audiences will probably titter at the feeble plot and melodramatic characters, poorly played by George Brent and Ethel Barrymore. Peter Collinson’s disastrous remake in 1975 showed how difficult it is to make this sort of hokum convincing.
