Entertaining box-office smash for all the family, although its materialistic, yuppie values always looked suspect. Michael J. Fox ‘s energy enables him not to be unduly overshadowed by Christopher Lloyd’s entertainingly zany inventor; there’s an affectionate evocation of the 1950s; and the ingenious plot makes lots of comic capital out of the Oedipal complications which ensue when the hero’s mother falls in love with him back in the past. Within six months of its release, it had grossed over $200,000,000 at the domestic box-office. Both public and critics liked this film, with very few reservations.
