The story of Moses (Charlton Heston).

Reviewed by Chris Tookey

Cecil B. DeMille's last film is a remake of his 1923 epic, and it is among his best work. Some of John Fulton's Oscar-winning visual effects (such as God writing on Moses's tablets of stone) are vulgar, the dialogue is banal, and there is not much characterisation; but there is a scale and magnificence about it, and a naive sincerity which is quite touching. Loyal Griggs's photography, the art direction, editing, sound and costumes were all Oscar-nominated. It was the top box-office hit of its year.
Sample dialogue... "Where are we going, Rachel?" "Some land flowing with milk and honey."
