An engrossing western which relies on suspense rather than action, strong performances more than violence. Leora Dana is outstanding as the farmer's wife, while Ford and Van Heflin are fine as men secretly envious of the other's life. The excellent cinematography is by Charles Lawton - and though the script is unnecessarily talky, it's based on an Elmore Leonard story, so at least the dialogue is good.
