The most gripping of all disaster movies, with convincing special effects, a delightful supporting performance from Fred Astaire and a splendidly shifty one from Robert (Man From Uncle ) Vaughn. The two heroes, Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, are less memorable. The film won Oscars for cinematography (Fred Koenecamp, Joseph Biroc) and Best Song (We May Never Live Like This Again ). Also nominated were the editing (Harold F. Kress, Carl Kress), score (John Williams) and art direction (William Creber). |
