The story of an Irish family living in the New York slums at the turn of the century.

Though hailed for its realism, the movie is rather too clean and art-directed; it looks like the big studio production it was. Even so, it's a pleasant, warm-hearted tearjerker, directed with pace and panache by Elia (On The Waterfront) Kazan on his debut. Kazan concentrated his attention on the actors, who repaid him with some of their best performances. On the technical side, he was greatly helped by his experienced Director of Photography, Leon Shamroy, and editor Dorothy Spencer.
