It wasn't a hit with a public who may have distrusted its bleeding-heart liberal assumptions; but the critics rightly admired this accomplished directorial debut by Sidney Lumet, who went on to make films such as Dog Day Afternoon and Network - but nothing better than this. It's neat, gripping and much imitated, with a faultless ensemble cast.
