An aging trapeze artist (Emil Jannings) suffers an accident and becomes manager of a cheap sideshow of dancing girls. Though married, he becomes infatuated with an orphaned dancer (Lya de Putti), whom he trains to be a trapeze performer.

Heavily censored on release, this movie omitted all mention of the anti-heros previous wife and family and began with him already married to the dancing girl. As so often with silents, the story now looks highly melodramatic, especially as it descends into a maelstrom of sexual jealousy. The director had himself been the manager of a vaudeville theatre, however, and puts his inside knowledge to good use. The swirling, impressionistic camerawork was ahead of its time, and much imitated.
