Stunningly animated by Richard Williams (who received a special Academy Award) and pacily directed by Robert Zemeckis, this is a perfect integration of cartoon and live action. It's also among the funniest comedies of all time - and Hoskins gives a terrific performance under the circumstances (most of the time he was having to act on his own).
Other notable contributions are from Charles Fleischer, who provides the voice of Roger Rabbit. The seductive Jessica 's spoken voice is Kathleen Turner's, while her singing voice belongs to Amy Irving. Special commendation should also go to Executive Producer Steven Spielberg who successfully negotiated the use of cartoon characters from different studios.
Not surprisingly, the film won Oscars for Visual Effects (Ken Ralston, Richard Williams, Edward Jones, George Gibbs), Sound Effects Editing (Charles L. Campbell, Louis L. Edermann), and Film Editing (Arthur Schmidt). It was nominated for Cinematography (Dean Cundey), Art Direction/Set Decoration (Elliott Scott, Peter Howitt), and Sound (Robert Knudson, John Boyd, Don Digirolamo, Tony Dawe).
