Both a rousing adventure story, and a superior psychological western in which the landscapes (beautifully photographed by William Daniels) illustrate the mood of the protagonists. Stewart's complicated, neurotic performance brought him renewed popularity with the public and launched him on two further collaborations with director Anthony Mann, Bend of the River (1952) and The Far Country (1944).
