For a modern Japanese horror film, this is refreshingly light on gore and cruelty. It's one of those horror flicks that establishes an air of normality, then sneaks into your subconscious (in this case, via your fear of technology) and becomes really quite frightening... indeed, by the end, very frightening. It's a bit too slow for western tastes, perhaps, but fans of psychological horror should not miss it. An inferior sequel, unsurprisingly called Ring 2, followed.A glossy American remake (also called The Ring) was made in 2002. |
