Vaguely reminiscent of Fritz Lang's silent masterpiece, though based on the 1940s comic by Osamu Tezuka, Metropolis is a Japanese cartoon set in the future, but seen with the eye of a an early twentieth century graphic artist. The best thing about it is some stunningly imagined city scenery.
Unfortunately, the poorly animated human characters keep getting in the way, with their blank faces, saucer eyes and imperfect lipsynch, and the plot - is well nigh unfathomable. As so often in Japanese cartoons, from Pokemon upwards, there's a vaguely eco-friendly, humanitarian message; but it's so outweighed by the film's pleasure in noise, violence and destruction that it seems little more than a cloak for a peculiarly incomprehensible kind of cultural barbarism.
