A competent but uninspired action cartoon from DreamWorks. Brad Pitt's lively voice-over as a piratical Sinbad and Michelle Pfeiffer's turn as a mischievous Goddess of Chaos are mildly diverting. Some of the animation is thrilling and action-packed.
The film is slick, more entertaining than the last few Disney cartoons, and okay for a rainy day, if you have children under 12.
It will be inoffensive to everyone except keen students of Sinbad's original Arabian Nights adventures, who may well find their eyes rolling in disbelief at the plot, dialogue and situations. Gladiator writer John Logan has plundered these from just about anywhere except the Arabian Nights - which begs the question of why they aren't more thrilling and imaginative.
I'm no purist about modern treatments of myth - I think Hercules is among the best of Disney's recent cartoons - but this achieves nowhere near that level of wit and invention. The story, distantly related to the Greek myth of Damon and Pythias, just isn't funny or exciting enough.
