Charlton Heston bares his chest and his soul, as a persecuted Jew in the time of Christ.

Terminally turgid and tediously devout remake of the 1925 silent, but splendidly spectacular: worth watching for the chariot race, the sea battle and the kind of crowd scenes you don't often see any more. It swept the Oscars for its year.

“When I arrived for the filming of Ben Hur, all the sets had been built, including Charlton Heston.”

(Gore Vidal)
