Forgettable picture about Alzheimers.

Sarah Polley is one of Canadas most intelligent young actresses, but her first film as writer-director is far from an unqualified triumph.
Its about a middle-aged woman (Julie Christie, pictured left) who is having to be institutionalised because of Alzheimers. Although Christie is excellent, the part offers only a rather pious, sentimentalised view of the affliction, from which my own mother suffered over many years.
The film doesnt contain much incident and is much less psychologically interesting than Iris, which covered similar territory.

Away From Her suffers from a plodding pace and an inadequate performance from Gordon Pinsent (pictured right), far too muted, flat and opaque as the husband. And Polleys attempt to weave in a couple of extra-marital love affairs are half-baked.
