A tough watch, but worthwhile.

Veteran Polish director Andrzej Wajda has made the most moving film of the week in Katyn, a lengthy, sombre and gruelling account of the massacre in which his own father died among 20,000 Polish officers during World War II.
For decades under Soviet domination, Poles were told that the Gestapo had murdered the officers in 1941, when in fact it was Stalin who had ordered their extermination, which actually took place in 1940.
Wajda is concerned not so much with uncovering the truth, as showing the human cost of the cover-up. What comes through with brutal clarity is the destructiveness of government-enforced lies.
The film isn’t as powerful as it might be. Wajda tries to tell the story from too many viewpoints, leading to a loss of focus and a measure of confusion as to who’s who. All the same, this is an important film that packs an emotional punch almost sixty years after the main events.
It’s hard not to share Wajda’s anger, and wonder just how many other history-distorting lies are being peddled today, and not only by the Russians.
