A rare example of an animated film thats aimed at grown-ups, this is an oddly touching, often rather sexy story of an on-off love affair between a Cuban jazz pianist (voiced by Emar Xor Ona) and an upwardly mobile nightclub singer (Limara Meneses, though sung by Idania Valdes).
The plot is awash with showbiz cliches, and the animation is crude, with static backgrounds and characters that look stiff and expressionless. Many references to jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker assume knowledge of their greatness, without really communicating why they were so remarkable.
But the lively soundtrack and exotic colours of Cuba compensate, as does a heartwarming final twist.
It reminded me of the documentary The Buena Vista Social Club, and thats no bad thing. Its vibrancy, verve and sheer love of music won me over by the end.
