And you’ll spit on their film, a leeringly exploitative remake of the notorious “video nasty”, I Spit On Your Grave.

In this, one of the world’s least likely authoresses (Sarah Butler, pictured) unwisely chooses to write her latest novel in a remote log cabin in the southern states, where she cavorts around in her underwear and attracts the attention of the local rapists.

It is hard to know which half of the movie is the more offensive: the first, which offers males the illicit thrill of watching a multiple rape played out in exhaustive and voyeuristic detail, and the second, in which our avenging heroine carries out elaborate tortures on the men who mistreated her – though her excesses are, in fact, rather tame after the baroque extravagances of the Saw movies and other recent ventures into torture porn.

The irony is that the film is adequately acted and competently shot; yet, somehow, this makes it all the more upsetting. You feel the people who made this may be capable of doing something worthwhile, which leaves one in the unhappy position of pondering the social and economic imperatives and pitiful state of popular culture that have driven them to producing this loathsome drivel instead.
