Self-indulgent western pastiche.
Reviewed by Chris Tookey

Rango is an animated spoof western packed full of in-jokes that will sail over the heads of most children and, indeed, anyone who isn’t familiar with acting technique, script development and such child-unfriendly films as Chinatown, A Fistful of Dollars and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Leading actor Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski and their chums must have had a whale of a time making it, and film buffs may enjoy it a good deal.

Scriptwise, though, it’s a mess. Some of it’s set in the human-dominated present, but most of it takes place without explanation in an animal-centred Old West. This may well become a cult hit, but it’s far too self-indulgent and pleased with itself to find a mass audience.

A few will find it enjoyably anarchic; most will find it dismayingly chaotic.
