Chronicle is an unexpected treat: an intelligent, unsettling view of what might happen if three ordinary, unheroic American teenagers developed super-powers.
It contains a powerhouse performance by Dane DeHaan (pictured), looking like the young Leonardo DiCaprio as he’s bullied at school but gains revenge on his persecutors in spectacularly misconceived fashion.
From mischievous pranks through to urban mayhem, the self-destructiveness of adolescent angst is accurately observed. It’s too bad the other two teenagers on display aren’t as superbly characterized.
The film is stylistically questionable – it starts as an example of “found footage”, like Blair Witch or TrollHunter but eventually spirals into a multi-camera extravaganza. However, I was never less than entertained.
Written and directed by 26 year-olds – the writer-director is Josh Trank and his co-writer is Max Landis, son of John – this augurs well for both their futures.
