Slight but funny.

Actress Lake Bell (pictured) turns writer-director and star of this entertaining little indie comedy set in the world of Hollywood voice-overs.

Ms Bell plays a 31 year-old actress and voice coach who makes ends meet by taking on doomed tasks like trying to make Eva Longoria sound cockney. Gamely, Ms Longoria plays herself.

Our heroine is also trying to make a career in movie trailers despite the fact that her father, Sam Sotto (Fred Melamed) is a voice-over legend who resents her muscling in on male territory and is principally interested in moving his daughter out of his house, so that his latest, youthful inamorata can move in.

It’s all very slight and comes across as a rather overextended sitcom. It’s messy and poorly structured, with a curiously daddy-centric version of feminism, but there are plenty of zingy one-liners and quirky characters to compensate.

This is a sporadically funny, warm-hearted take on screwball comedy, with a beady attitude towards blockbusters that are, according to Geena Davis as an unusually honest Hollywood executive, “cancerous to the intelligence of young women”. Amen to that.
