Robin (Errol Flynn, pictured right with Olivie de Havilland) swashbuckles his way to success, with help from Maid Marian (de Havilland) and his merry men.

Reviewed by Chris Tookey

The acting and script are not exactly subtle, but this film is still wonderful fun - widely, and rightly, considered to be a definitive cinematic swashbuckler, climaxing in one of the most exciting swordfights ever on screen. Not the least extraordinary aspect of this apparently seamless success was that it was the work of two very different directors: William Keighley and Michael Curtiz, who replaced Keighley during shooting, and shot virtually all the action sequences.
"Unfortunately, the action scenes were not effective, and I had to replace the director in mid-production, an unheard-of-event at that time. I felt that only Mike Curtiz could give the picture the color and scope it needed. The reason we hadn't used him in the first plce was because Errol had begged us not to. He preferred the elegant and civilized William Keighley [who had directed him in The Prince and The Pauper ]"
(Producer Hal B. Wallis)
