A loser agent in showbiz (Woody Allen, pictured left) inadvertently gets on the wrong side of the Mafia.

Woody Allen gives one of his most appealing performances as a showbiz agent whose variety acts invariably walk out on him as soon as they achieve success. Mia Farrow (pictured right) is a revelation - and almost unrecognizable - in the role of a Mafia gangster's moll. The comedy is low-key but gradually sneaks up on you, with its endearing affection for the naff end of showbiz. Perhaps Woody Allen's most underrated film.
