Klaus Kinski gives a memorable character study of a man obsessed with gold; the spectacular cinematography of the Peruvian Andes has a hallucinatory intensity; and the film works well enough as an epic boys' own adventure. However, the pace is ponderous, as is the moralising: Herzog seems to be trying to tell us something about the nature of fascism, but never makes his point clearly enough.
