Mild-mannered mediaeval subject (Danny Kaye) poses as jester to defeat King Roderick (Cecil Parker) who has ousted the real royal family.

Danny Kaye is at his best in this much loved but heavy-handed spoof on mediaeval swashbucklers, and the "chalice from the palace" routine remains a classic. Whether or not you appreciate Kaye, the songs are jolly and the supporting cast performs wonders with some fairly mediaeval jokes. Compared with Mel Brooks's Robin Hood: Men In Tights (1994), it's a masterpiece.
