A landmark in silent film: a film which paid attention to the common man without patronising or (as in the case of Chaplin) sentimentalising him. Though impressively realistic in many ways, the film failed to find an audience. Movie historians since have tended to blame the public for not being able to cope with reality; but the characters are dull, and the film is a little too relentlessly depressing.
