Audiences stayed away from this beautiful, critically acclaimed film, Malick's follow-up to Badlands - and no wonder. Even Nestor Almendros's cinematography (which rightly won an Oscar) can't disguise the fact that the screenplay is sordid, depressing and leaves too many questions unanswered (why, for example, does Brooke Adams pretend to be Richard Gere's sister?). The characters are undeveloped, and the voice-over is irritating. Ennio Morricone's score, the sound and costume design were all nominated.
