An architect (Mervyn Johns) finds that a country house is inhabited by people from his nightmares.

Still the most highly regarded of all portmanteau horror films, and one which used some of the leading talents at Michael Balcon’s Ealing Studios. Parts of it are very disappointing, and the comic relief has dated, but the best parts - notably the mirror sketch directed by Robert Hamer, and the story directed by Alberto Cavalcanti, in which ventriloquist Michael Redgrave is taken over by his own dummy) are among the most frightening sequences ever filmed. The final pay-off is a classic.
