James Stewart is delightful, and Marlene Dietrich (pictured right) gives one of her most flamboyant performances as Frenchy the saloon singer.
Surprisingly, most critics on release hated it; perhaps they were confused as to whether the melodramatic elements were to be taken seriously, or maybe they were pre-judging it. Stewart was not yet a star, and Dietrich had just appeared in a string of bad movies.
Whatever the reason, they were dead wrong; it became a big hit, and is now rightly considered among the best comedy westerns. A remake of Justice Rides Again (1932).
