Great visuals, shame about the script. Young Charlie Korsmo, Glenne Headly and an unrecognizable Al Pacino do their best to give the dreary narrative some human interest and humour; but Warren Beatty gives a lacklustre performance in the lead. Beatty's girl-friend of the time, Madonna, isn't up to the job of being a femme fatale, or singing Stephen Sondheim's songs, which are far from his best - even though one, Sooner or Later, won an Oscar. Art direction and makeup also won Academy Awards. Vittorio Storaro's cinematography, the costume design and sound were all nominated.
