Stoker (George Bancroft) goes to jail for the prostitute he loves (Betty Compson).

One of the last silents, justly famed for its foggy, stylised dockland settings. They and the femme fatale plot could be seen as early precursors of film noir. But it's awfully gloomy and Germanic; while acting styles have changed so much that it becomes hard to get emotionally involved.
