A Moscow doctor (Omar Sharif) is separated from his true love (Julie Christie) by historical events beyond his control.

Reviewed by Chris Tookey

The story proceeds by fits and starts, and the historical background is confusing if you don't already know it. Those who have read the book also accuse the film of being a trivialisation. But this remains one of the best cinematic epics, with generally strong performances (from Steiger and Courtenay, especially) and Julie Christie at her loveliest. The set-pieces are superbly photographed by Freddie Young (who rightly won an Oscar) - the real Russian Revolution probably looked unimpressive by comparison. And the love story between Julie Christie and Omar Sharif still jerks the tears, helped along by Maurice Jarre's Oscar-winning score. The critics have always hated this film; but the public made it one of the most popular of all time.
