Robert Getchell's lightweight story with feminist overtones but a soppy ending is given a hefty dose of realism by Scorsese's tough direction and a realistically nasty performance by Harvey Keitel. A young Jodie Foster makes an impact as the boyish girl who befriends the son, and Ellen Burstyn deserved her Oscar. It's an odd mixture of 70s road movie and 40s weepie, but it has a lot of charm.
