Ambitious starlet (Anne Baxter) undermines ageing Broadway star (Bette Davis)

It's talky, the storyline is thin, and the characters are merely stereotypes, but this is still a classic drama, thanks to witty dialogue and four sensational performances including an all-time-great exhibition of histrionics by Bette Davis. As a withering satire on the insincerity of theatrical luvvies, it has hardly dated at all. |
The New York Film Critics and the British Film Academy voted it Best Motion Picture of 1950. Mankiewicz won the Directors Guild Award as well as the New York Film Critics Award. Bette Davis won the New York Film Critics Award and the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Female Performance of 1951. |
