Two boxers struggle to make a living: one is on his way up (Jeff Bridges), the other is in decline (Stacy Keach).

John Huston was a boxer in his youth, and it shows in this truthful, gripping, atmospheric film. Bridges is outstanding, and the film’s quite moving about the minimal expectations of its characters. The big drawbacks are the disjointed plot and its consistently depressing tone.
