Burt Lancaster goes in for Flynn-Fairbanks style swashbuckling, in this hugely enjoyable and very popular adventure story, produced on the cheap (some of the sets were borrowed from Flynn's The Adventures of Don Juan) and owing a good deal to The Adventures of Robin Hood. Don't expect subtlety or period accuracy. It received Oscar nominations for cinematography (Ernest Haller) and score (Max Steiner). |
