Three space-travellers crash-land on Mongo, home planet of inter-planetary arch-fiend Ming the Merciless (Max von Sydow).

Knowingly kitsch space opera, with wonderful sets, costumes and colours which evoke the future as seen by the illustrators of old comic books. The acting isnt up to much, but Max Von Sydow is magnificent, and Ornella Muti is delightfully naughty as Mings nymphomaniac daughter. The plot is nonsense, but set-pieces linger in the mind, especially the scene where Flash (Sam Jones, pictured) and Prince Barin (Timothy Dalton) play a fairy-tale version of Russian roulette, taking turns to put a hand into a tree trunk, and risking amputation by the resident monster. Expensively produced, it failed to make back its money and received a mixed critical reception; but if you approach it in the right spirit, its great fun. |
