| David Cronenbourg's initially gripping and ultimately revolting remake of the 1958 cult film succeeds in everything it sets out to do, but there’s a nastiness and sadism about it. Jeff Goldblum (pictured right) and Geena Davis (left) hold their own with remarkably realistic performances among the Oscar-winning make-up and special effects. Critical reaction was mixed, but generally favourable. The film grossed almost $35 million in its first nine weeks at the domestic box-office, and led to an inferior sequel, The Fly II (1989) with Eric Stoltz. |
