An Argentinian young man (Rudolph Valentino, pictured left) fights for France during World War I.

Reviewed by Chris Tookey

A silent classic, now very dated, and so long that it's virtually unwatchable. It's less of a war film than a love story, played out against the background of war; it's hardly the ringing anti-war statement which some claim it to be. Even so, the film gives the best hint to modern audiences of why Valentino became a star. Remade (badly) in 1961.
