| Handsomely mounted horror, played fairly straight: no longer very scary, but with splendidly Gothic atmosphere and sets, and an eerie Frank Skinner score. The leading actors are excellent, especially Basil Rathbone who is a great improvement on Colin Clive. But the two female performances are weak, and Karloff - in his third and final appearance as the monster - hasnt enough to do. The biggest problem is that the narrative is not as strong as its two immediate predecessors, Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein. |
