Horie's voyage could have been a hoary old subject, but thanks to inspired direction and superb cinematography by Yoshihiro Yamazaki, it is gripping throughout. The flashbacks to life on land are integrated effectively, and the unforgettable finale makes this a minor classic. One caveat: it's a movie that is best enjoyed on widescreen.
