Viennese court composer Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) envies talent of Mozart (Tom Hulce) and plots to kill him.

A film which, like Shaffer's play, is ponderous, overlong and unconvincing when it depicts genius: Tom Hulce's Mozart is a posturing ninny. Its greatest strength is a wonderfully convincing portrait of envy, in the form of Salieri. Glorious to look at, and hear. A longer directors cut was released in 2002.
