Unhappy country girl (Patty Duke) turns Hollywood sex goddess (Kim Stanley) but still can not find happiness.

Relentlessly vicious indictment of the Hollywood star system and especially the Marilyn Monroe cult, written - at times over-written - by that self-appointed scourge of the media, Paddy Chayefsky. Kim Stanley doesn't quite have the looks of which sex goddesses are made, but gives a powerful performance in her big-screen debut. Lloyd Bridges is fine in the Joe DiMaggio role of the sports star husband (though here he's a boxer, not a baseball star). The amazingly unsubtle script, which for some reason was Oscar-nominated, is the thing which makes this film a camp classic. |
