The story of Christ in the words of the Gospel itself.

Desperately slow, soporific exercise in cinematic "realism", much acclaimed on release - probably because its gritty, documentary style departed so completely from hokey, Hollywood treatments of the same story. Pasolini's Marxism diminishes Christ by trying to portray him as a revolutionary, motivated primarily by fury at social injustices; and the acting by non-professionals is variable. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at Venice, 1964. |
