Thieves rob a train.

Reviewed by Chris Tookey

Though only ten minutes long and containing only 14 scenes, this is generally regarded as the first narrative film. Primitive though it is, the exterior shooting is quite adventurous; and it is still possible to imagine its impact on audiences of the time.

"From laboratory examination of some of the popular films of... Melies... I came to the conclusion that a picture telling a story in continuity form might draw the customers back to the theatres." (Edwin S. Porter, 1904)
