A US artist (Gene Kelly) patronised by a rich woman (Nina Foch) falls instead for Parisian gamine (Leslie Caron).

The story is trite and predictable. The I Got Rhythm number is given horribly twee treatment, and the final ballet is so tasteless that it puts some viewers' teeth on edge. But the performers are so outstanding, and the Gershwin score so imperishable, that the film has achieved a classic status.
