A twee fantasy whose mawkishness hasn't worn well, though the film achieved popularity thanks to its cosy view of the afterlife at a time when millions were dying in war. Montgomery (unaccountably Oscar-nominated) seems ill-at-ease, and who can blame him; there's too much chat, and not enough humour. Joseph Walker's cinematography was Oscar-nominated. Warren Beatty's 1978 remake, Heaven Can Wait, was no better.
