At the very least, a silver oldie. David Lean made a touching film of Harold Brighouse's comedy-drama about Lancashire life in the 1890s. Strong performances by Charles Laughton, John Mills and Brenda de Banzie almost conceal the fact that the film peaks at the end of the second act, and loses impetus in the last half hour. |
