Two aristocrats (Juliette Binoche and Olivier Martinez) flee a cholera epidemic in 1830s Provence.

Jean-Paul Rappeneau's attempt to follow up his success with Cyrano de Bergerac is another costume epic. It has two attractive leads; the Provence countryside is handsome; and even the corpses are displayed with an eye to the picturesque. Unfortunately, the leading characters aren't all that sympathetic. The picaresque plot rambles with little pace or sense of direction. It hasn't the incident or energy to work as a lusty adventure, and there isn't the depth of character orbackground for it to succeed as historical romance. Despite a few lively sequences, it's a beautiful bore, and a cameo appearance by Gerard Depardieu serves only to emphasise that this is not remotely in the same class as Cyrano.
